Vans Aircraft RV-12 Airplane Build, Section 26 Seat Backs (part 1)

Reference: page 26-02; 1.5 hours

I'm skipping Section 25 Installation of the Tailcone until later. Since, I'm building my RV-12 airplane in half of a small (modern) two car garage, space is tight. While storage is available elsewhere, actual working area at home is limited. So, I will holding off installing the tailcone off as long as possible. I have read other builder's efforts at this and it seems to work just fine. So, this section deals with building the Seatbacks for the RV-12 airplane. Let's get to it!

Note: The instructions in this section pertain to the assembly of one seatback only. Unless otherwise specified all instructions given for one seatback apply to both. To help prevent mistakes and speed up the construction process, assemble both seatbacks at the same time.

Step 1: Trim the bottom corners of the Seat back Angles to the reference notch as shown by Van's Aircraft in figure 1 on page 26-02.

Step 2: Remove the joining material of the Seatback Angle to separate the Upper Seatback Angle, and the Lower Seatback Angle.

Step 3: Separate the Seatback Braces by removing the joining material.

Step 4: Pull the hinge pin from an AN257-P3 hinge. Set the pin asided to be used on Page 26-04.

Builder's note: So what hinge material to use? AN257-P3 is 1 1/4" wide and and AN257-P2 is 1 1/16" wide. Both are pictured below.

Step 5: From the AN257-P3 hinge halves, make an Seatback Hinge using the dimension given, and remove the center eyelet as shown in figure 4 of the RV-12 aircraft planes on page 26-02.

Step 6: Drill a #30 locating hole in the Seatback Hinge using the deminsions given in Figure 4 of Van's Aircraft plans.

Step 7: Remove the hinge pin from an AN257-P2 hinge. Set the pin aside to be used on page 26-04.

Step 8: From the AN257-P2 hinge halves, make the Fwd and Aft Seatback Brace Hinge per dimensions given in figure 5 on page 26-02 of the RV-12 airplane plans.

Step 9: Drill a #30 locating hole in the Fwd and Aft Seatback Brace Hinges using the dimensions called out in figure 5 of the aircraft plans.

Step 10: Cleco the locating hole of the Aft Seatback Brace Hinge to the Seatback Brace. Clamp the hinge securely in place parallel to the long edge of the seatback brace as shown in figure 6 of the RV-12 plans.

Step 11: Match-drill #30 the holes from the Seatback Brace into the Aft Seatback Brace Hinge. Mark parts, disassemble and deburr, cleco back together.

Step 12: Cleco the locating hole in the Seatback Hinge to the Lower Seatback Angle. Clamp the seatback hinge parallel to the long edge of the lower seatback angle as shown in figure 7 on page 26-02 of the RV-12 airplane plans.

Step 13: Match-drill #30 the holes from the Lower Seatback Angle into the Seatback Hinge. Mark parts, disassemble and deburr, then cleco back together.

This completes page 26-02 of the RV-12 seatbacks.
